One Class, One County, One Weekend
April 28, 2010 by Staff
The (self-proclaimed) “Granite Capital of the World” lies just east of Athens, Ga., in Elbert County. In late February, 16 students from the Documentary Photography class at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication spent a weekend exploring what it means to live, work, play, love and worship in the county. These are their stories …
- Amanda Duval, Refurbishing the Richard B. Russell Dam
- Ashley Strickland, The Coach
- Autumn Eckenbrecht, The Children of the Music Man
- Emily Karol, The Closing of J.C. Pool’s Clothing Store
- Elissa Ewald, Tate’s Grove Church
- Emily Gomez, Everyone Knows Everyone
- Frannie Fabian, The Family Granite Business
- Jon-Michael Sullivan, Making History in Stone
- Jenna Walker, A Change in the Tune of the First United Methodist Church
- Katherine Poss, Fancy Feather Farm
- Lindsay Dobras, Polar Bear Plunge
- Meghan Pittman, A Changed Man
- Miriam Camp, At Harmony with Nature
- Natalie Minik, Shades of Gray
- Reneé Aylworth, Willis Dimension Stone
- Sarah Pelham, The HuNan Restaurant
Over the course of the weekend, students would visit the newsroom of the Elberton Star and sit with professionals who helped coach them through technical and storytelling problems. The workshop was sponsored by the Cox Institute for Newspaper Management Studies and only succeeded due to the presence of a stellar set of editors – Sarah Bates from the Charleston Post and Courier, Mike Haskey from the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, David LaBelle, David Noah from the Center for Teaching and Learning at UGA, Mike Roy and Billy Weeks.
